Over the past two years, the Stony Brook Family Medicine Residency has transitioned to a more community based practice associated with a FQHC at Southampton Hospital. What does this mean?
- In January 2015, the SUNY Board of Trustees unanimously approved the merge between Stony Brook University Hospital and Southampton Hospital.
- Beginning July 2014, the PGY 1 class began seeing patients in a newly modeled FMC located one block east of Southampton Hospital (It’s a 2 minute walk. If you drive, there is resident only parking available).
- By July 2016, all Family Medicine residents will be stationed at Southampton. Stony Brook Family Medicine and Southampton Osteopathic Family Medicine have enjoyed a friendly partnership and will become one program.
- This transition has allowed us to improve many of our required rotations and opens up the availability of new elective rotations.
- To minimize travel, most rotations have moved to Southampton.
- Residents will have the opportunity to select electives at our university hospital or in a community setting.
- During the transitional years, we have had teleconferencing in addition to live on site conferences.
- Inpatient training has shifted to Southampton Hospital with both Internal Medicine and Family Medicine faculty and hospitalists.
- Continuity experiences will improve. The move has enabled residents to experience an authentic exposure to “real world” primary care.
- Residents have enjoyed more direct contact with subspecialists involved in the co-management of your patients.
- Residents have had the opportunity to interact with Southampton primary care residents and attendings in the hospital and in the community setting.
- Southampton is a paradise for those who love the outdoors and watersports. The east end of Long Island is perfect for boating, swimming, windsurfing, waterskiing, fishing, hiking, cycling, golfing, etc.
- In the future, a new state-of-the-art hospital will be built on the grounds of Stony Brook University’s Southampton campus which will train the next generation of healthcare professionals and provide additional healthcare services.
