The Family Medicine trainee will be able to participate in academic sessions offered, to include:
Stony Brook Family Medicine Grand Rounds
Grand Round speakers are Family Medicine Boarded Faculty that take place once a week.
Social Medicine Grand Rounds
Social Medicine Grand Rounds are given twice a month by local, national and international speakers with variety of topics that aims to understand the root causes of health inequities and disparities.
Dedicated Family Medicine Journal Clubs
Journal Club is given once a month led by a Family Medicine board-certified faculty member where discussions take place, where trainees explore selected AAFP articles and engage in conversations about up-to-date primary care research and topics.
Family Medicine Board Review Sessions and Conference
Board review sessions are scheduled once a month to review and discuss board questions. Trainees attend a multi-day Board Review conference in the Spring of their PGY-3 training year.
Primary Care Didactic Sessions
Trainees are given Protected Time for 4 hours every week to participate in didactic sessions to include primary care topics that are commonly seen in both the inpatient and outpatient setting
.
Pediatric Didactic Sessions
Trainees will participate in didactic sessions that discuss and explore pediatric primary medicine. Trainees will be able to participate in a pediatric lecture series given the Summer of their intern year.
Women's Health Didactic Sessions
Trainees will participate in didactic sessions that discuss women's health topics. A variety of women's health services, gynecological care, and obstetric care will be taught where trainees can care for low-risk obstetrical patients and perform gynecological procedures.
Palliative Care Symposium
Trainees will attend a Hospice and Palliative Care Symposium during one of their years in training.
LGBTQ+ Symposium
Trainees will attend a LGBTQ+ Symposium during one of their years in training.

- Insertion/Removal of Nexplanon and IUDs
- Point of care Ultrasound guided injections
- Joint injections
- Trigger point injections
- Pap smears
- Central line placement
- EKG interpretations
- Deliveries
- Colonoscopies
- Endometrial Biopsy
- Nail Removals
- Skin Biopsies
- Suturing
- Suture removal
