Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Radiology Department Approved to Begin Pluvicto™ Prostate Cancer Treatment

(Southampton) March 19, 2025--Stony Brook Southampton Hospital is the only approved clinical center on the East End of Long Island eligible to administer Pluvicto™. This radiopharmaceutical treats adults diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer called PSMA-positive mCRPC (i.e., prostate specific membrane antigen-positive metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer).

"Pluvicto™ is an important clinical advancement to offer people with progressing mCRPC, as it can improve survival rates for those who have limited treatment options," said Samuel Ryu MD, Director, Stony Brook Medicine Phillips Family Cancer Center. "This precision cancer treatment is a step forward in the evolution of medicine for prostate cancer."

The treatment combines a targeting compound (ligand) with a therapeutic radioisotope (a radioactive particle). After administration into the bloodstream, it binds to targeted cells. Once bound, energy emissions from the radioisotope damage the targeted PSMA expressing cells and surrounding cellular environment, helping patients live longer by delaying disease progression and reducing tumor volume.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Americans with a prostate gland.

With over 1,4 million new cases and 375,000 deaths in 2020 alone, prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in 112 countries —more than half the world.
