Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Providing PT, OT and SLPs Via Telehealth

Southampton, NY- Stony Brook Southampton Hospital is providing Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Language Pathology via telehealth visits. Many patients of all ages may improve or restore mobility, movement, strength, flexibility, balance and coordination through virtual rehabilitation sessions conducing online in the comfort of their home through HIPPA compliant software.

These real-time, telehealth visits facilitate live, two-way interactions between patients, caregivers and rehabilitation therapists using audiovisual technologies. Telemedical care is an alternative to an on-site clinical visit for the purposes of consultation and diagnosis. In addition to reducing transportation costs and eliminating close of two or more individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic, these convenient virtual rehabilitation sessions have been shown to improve patient satisfaction and potentially improve care outcomes. A UC Irvine School of Medicine study recently revealed that telehealth was as effective as in-clinic therapy for improving upper extremity motor control post-stroke.

Virtual technology may be used by therapists to perform an environmental assessment, conduct a goal setting session or dispense patient education. It may also be possible to administer functional training, movement facilitation, a guided assessment or a therapeutic exercise through the use of live video.

Patients and caregivers interested in scheduling an online telehealth PT, OT, or SLP visit, can call the Hospital’s Rehabilitation Department at 631-726-8520. Telehealth sessions are covered by Medicare and most insurance providers.  Virtual rehabilitation allows patients to access medical services from the safety of their own home and still receive quality one-on-one care and education from a licensed healthcare professional. Should your rehabilitation necessitate an in person visit, we will provide access to a safe, sanitized environment.
