Southampton, NY—Southampton Hospital has received the Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. The award recognizes Southampton Hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted guidelines. The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality of care for stroke patients and may reduce disability and save lives.
“This recognition, together with the creation of the new Audrey & Martin Gruss Heart & Stroke Center, demonstrates that Southampton Hospital is able to provide the expertise and medical intervention critical to preventing death and long-term disability,” said Robert S. Chaloner, Hospital President & CEO. “Learn how to spot a stroke. Symptoms may include: 1) numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg; 2) sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech; 3) sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; 4) sudden trouble walking, dizziness or loss of balance; 5) sudden severe headache. If you have any of these symptoms or observe them in someone else, call 911 immediately.”
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
