Southampton, NY—Many residents of Eastern Long Island have suffered from a disease brought on by a tick bite. You don’t have to take a walk in a field or the woods to have a potentially deadly run-in with a tick. We are all too familiar with Lyme, but ticks are known to carry other diseases—anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, spotted fever, and tularemia.
To address the many concerns East Enders have about tick-borne disease, Southampton Hospital has launched a Tick-Borne Disease Resource Center with a mission to educate the public, promote collaboration in the medical community and facilitate access to diagnosis and treatment of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. The Center’s advisory panel is comprised of doctors and medical professionals across nine specialties, including family practice, internal medicine, infectious disease, allergy, pediatrics, emergency medicine, neurology, psychology, and rheumatology.
It is expected that their collaboration will strengthen their ability to combat the affects of tick-borne diseases and advance education on prevention and treatment options for Eastern Long Island residents and visitors. In addition, a dedicated “help” line, (631) 726-TICK, is in place.
