Dr. Geri Schmitt talks about what PCOS is, the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and services offered.

PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and is a hormonal disorder that impacts women during their reproductive years. PCOS is caused by the ovary not ovulating on a regular basis and develops tiny cysts around the ovary. This then increases the production of androgens or testosterone that leads to fertility issues in women as well as side effects related to PCOS.

There is no specific cause as to why one may be diagnosed with PCOS, but it has been seen that there is a correlation that women with PCOS are also insulin resistant. PCOS is also found to be hereditary.

Symptoms of PCOS

  • Irregular periods, missed periods or very light periods
  • Excess body hair
  • Enlarged ovaries or cysts present on the ovaries
  • Acne
  • Infertility
  • Weight gain

Diagnosis

PCOS can be diagnosed through blood tests, ultrasound and conversations with your gynecologist during your annual women’s health visit.

Treatment

Depending on what the patient is looking for, there are treatments to assist with acne and hair growth, regulating your cycle as well as fertility options. These treatments may include oral contraceptives, diabetes medication to lower insulin resistance and help lower androgen levels, along with a change in overall diet and increase in physical activity.
