Whether it’s a fall from a bicycle, a sports injury, dehydration, heat-related illness, allergic reaction, or another unexpected emergency, East End families can feel confident knowing that Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Department is specially prepared to care for children.
New York State Department of Health recognizes emergency departments through The Always Ready for Children (ARC) Pediatric Recognition Program, which evaluates emergency departments on their capacity to effectively manage pediatric medical and trauma emergencies.
Stony Brook Southampton Hospital first earned the “Pediatric Ready” designation in 2019, demonstrating its commitment to providing high-quality emergency care tailored to the unique needs of children. To achieve this recognition, the hospital participated in the National Pediatric Readiness Project, met rigorous readiness assessment standards, and designated pediatric emergency care coordinators to help ensure the highest level of preparedness.
Samantha Pulliam, MBA, MSN, RN, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Specialty Accreditation Director, serves as Nurse Pediatric Care Coordinator and Michael Ameres, MD, Emergency Medicine physician, serves as Physician Pediatric Care Coordinator.
“Summer is a wonderful time for children to explore, play, and enjoy the outdoors, but it’s also a time when preventable injuries become more common,” said Pulliam. “We encourage families to make safety a priority, and if an emergency does happen, parents can feel confident knowing our Emergency Department is specially prepared to provide high-quality pediatric emergency care close to home.”
In addition to its Pediatric Ready designation, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Department is a Level III Trauma Center and features a dedicated pediatric trauma and resuscitation room. The hospital also has the ability to directly transfer patients to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital when advanced pediatric specialty care is needed.
This summer, parents should remember to make sure their children stay hydrated, wear helmets and life jackets, use sunscreen, and supervise children around water. If an emergency occurs, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital is always ready to care for you and your family.
Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Department is located at 240 Meeting House Lane, and is open 24/7, 365 days a year, even on holidays, because emergency care never takes a break!
