Stony Brook Southampton Hospital offers free classes to help support you every step of the way, from the initiation of treatment and beyond. Programs and services are for those affected by cancer: those in treatment, thrivers, survivors, and caregivers. Our practitioners and instructors have completed advanced training and specialize in cancer care. Classes are offered virtually as well as in person.

Cancer Wellness Workshops
Led by a certified instructor, this ancient Chinese technique uses meditation, controlled breathing and movement to help alleviate anxiety, decrease pain and/or nausea and support immunity. For people who have been newly diagnosed, are in treatment or remission. Sign up here!
This class is open to men and women cancer patients and caregivers. Singing Bowls help support the body’s natural healing ability though relaxation. Crystal-singing bowls, Tibetan Tones bowls, gong, tuning forks and chimes are also used to help reduce tension and stress. A lymphedema Exercise and Education Program
Intended for those currently undergoing treatment as well as survivors. Led by a certified lymphedema physical therapist and a cancer exercise specialist, this structured program includes exercises that promote upper and lower extremity lymph drainage in combination with education and support. Together we can learn, understand and manage the symptoms associated with lymphedema. Anyone at risk for or affected by lymphedema is encouraged to attend. Sign up here!
This full spectrum yoga class covers basic level 1 yoga with modification for various cancer conditions (s/p surgery, reconstruction, colostomies, decreased lung volumes, etc.) so that patients are comfortable exercising within their limitations. The class ends with restorative yoga poses to increase lung capacity and relax the muscles. Release tension and feel stronger. Exercise has shown to reduce the effects of cancer treatment related symptoms, especially cancer related fatigue. Pilates helps strengthen the body while centering the mind. Strength training helps you maintain muscle mass, improve balance and mobility and is customizable for all fitness levels. Led by a certified Yoga for Cancer instructor, this group class focuses on progressive muscle relaxation and mind peace using sounds, visualizations and breathing techniques to help increase awareness of the present moment, reduce stress, and enhance personal and spiritual growth. No prior singing experience required! This workshop is led by a teaching artist and engages participants in a therapeutic chorus. Participants will enjoy the creative process of musical exploration while developing important social connections. Offered in collaboration with CTREE (Center for Therapeutic Riding of the East End) and Fighting Chance, this program focuses on the benefit of horses on emotional support to those experiencing stress and uncertainty. Fit & Strong is an exercise program designed for cancer patients and those on their journey into survivorship. The class offers safe and effective exercises education that specifically address the deep tissue scarring from lymph node dissection, and range of motion limitations often a result of mastectomy procedures. Together, we can improve fatigue, increase strength and flexibility and better prepare your body for the physical activity of grooming, and the essential skills of tacking your horse For people who have been newly diagnosed, are in treatment or remission and caregivers. Offered in collaboration with The Parrish Art Museum, this program focuses on art as a therapeutic tool to assist those with cancer, survivors and care givers in managing stressors. Participants have the opportunity to step away from thinking about their cancer and let their creative side flourish. Healing, Prevention and Maintenance
This dynamic nutrition workshop empowers participants to use Food As Medicine to nourish the mind, body and soul. Our staff has a multitude of experience and knowledge. They work to create recipes and tips specifically for people with a cancer diagnosis. Workshops include a discussion highlighting Food as Medicine and features cooking demonstrations, recipes and tastings. We encourage all to attend and learn how to make every bite count toward nourishing the body, mind, and spirit. For people who have been newly diagnosed, are in treatment or remission and caregivers. Our therapists are certified in cancer massage. We offer onsite chair massage at PFCC to patients receiving radiation and chemotherapy (during the session), as well as three (3) free half-hour massages at any of our Wellness Institute locations.
